Q. I’m visiting Las Vegas for the first time this weekend what should I do apart from checking out the casinos?
A. We’d put visiting the
Las Vegas sign
and having your picture taken in front of it at the top of the list of touristy must-dos. There are a number of free shows along the Strip that you could watch such as the Las Vegas
Fountains
of Bellagio; Mirage
Volcano;
and the Sirens of TI.
Visit a couple of the fabulous Las Vegas
shopping malls
on the Strip; we love the
Forum Shops
at Caesars Palace but there are many excellent ones. Have a meal at one of the best restaurants such as
Mon Ami Gabi
before seeing a show or visiting one of the
clubs.
Q. I’m 17 what’s there to do if I can’t gamble?
A. You’ll have to give the casinos a wide berth as they don’t let under 21s in but there’s lots you can do:
For example, visit the Mandalay Bay
Shark Reef
Aquarium; Siegfried and Roy's
Secret Garden
and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage; Sirens of TI show at
Treasure Island
Las Vegas; Mirage
Volcano;
Madame Tussauds at the
Venetian
hotel;
Fountains of Bellagio;
MGM Grand
Lion
Habitat;
Flamingo
Habitat;
Coca Cola Store
and M&Ms; World; have your picture taken by the Las Vegas
Sign.
For rides visit New York New York and ride the
rollercoaster
or head over to the Stratosphere
Tower
and have a go on their
four rides
if you’re feeling brave!
Take a trip out to the
Grand Canyon,
the
Hoover Dam,
or
Red Rock Canyon.
This list isn’t exhaustive but will hopefully give you some ideas. Note that the curfew time on Las Vegas Boulevard for anyone under the age of 18 who’s not accompanied by a parent or guardian is 9pm.
Q. Tell me honestly. Can Vegas really be a family holiday?
A. Yes, absolutely. There’s so much you can do altogether. Under 21s aren’t allowed in to the casinos but there are so many attractions that you can visit together:
There’s a number of animal attractions you could visit. Some are free and some you have to pay for. These include: MGM Grand Lion Habitat; Flamingo Habitat; the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Aquarium; Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage.
There are shows along the Strip that you can watch that are suitable for the whole family: Fountains of Bellagio; Mirage Volcano; and the Fall of Atlantis at the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. You could also take them to the Tournament of Kings dinner show at the Excalibur Hotel Las Vegas Nevada.
Other great places where you can go with the whole family include Madame Tussauds at the Venetian; Coca Cola Store and M&Ms; World; the Las Vegas Sign; Conservatory at the Bellagio.
If you like games and rides see Gameworks at the Showcase Mall next to the MGM Grand; the Rollercoaster at New York New York; Stratosphere rides; Adventuredome at Circus Circus
If you want to venture outside of Las Vegas you could take a trip to the Grand Canyon; the Hoover Dam; Zion National Park or Red Rock Canyon.
Q. What are some good things to do as a couple in Las Vegas?
A. Especially good things to do as a couple would be a Gondola Ride at the Venetian; watch one of the Las Vegas Fountains of Bellagio shows; have a romantic meal in a restaurant such as the Eiffel Tower restaurant at the Paris hotel or the Top of the World restaurant at the Stratosphere.
Q. What’s the name of the walkway with the roof that lights up?
A. Fremont Street Experience which is a huge tourist attraction in the Downtown area. It's made up of 12 million lights which makes it the biggest screen in the World.
Q. Which helicopter company should I choose?
A. There are lots of tour operators running helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. From our own experiences and those of our friends and family we can whole-heartedly recommend Maverick Helicopters.
Q. Is it worth taking a trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas by car?
A. If you drive you won’t have so much time to spend at the actual Grand Canyon. You’re looking at around 18 hours in total to visit the South Rim from Vegas and approximately ten hours to visit the West Rim so it’ll be a very long day. If you want to do it this way investigate a coach tour so at least you can relax on the journey.
If you take a helicopter tour instead you’ll be able to pack the whole thing into half a day, spend more time at the Canyon and actually get to land in it not just peer over the edge.
Q. Can you take young children on a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon?
A. Maverick helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon are suitable for young children. When we asked the Reservations Supervisor she said, “ I recommend tours that include landing at the base of the Canyon, as the children get a break, 40-45mins in the helicopter, then 30mins on the Ground at the Canyon and then 40-45mins return flight. I should point out that there are no bathroom facilities at the Canyon Floor.”
